Palazzo Nelli
Palazzo Nelli, also known as Casa Nelli, is a historic building of inestimable value located in the vibrant heart of the San Lorenzo district in Florence. Situated at via del Canto de' Nelli 10, between Piazza Madonna degli Aldobrandini and the Central Market, the palace enjoys a location of absolute prestige, directly facing Michelangelo Buonarroti’s New Sacristy (Sagrestia Nuova).
The Nelli Family and the Legacy of Plautilla Nelli
The de' Nelli family played a prominent role in Florentine history, linking their name to some of the most illustrious figures of the Renaissance. Notable family members include Niccolò Machiavelli (son of Bartolomea de' Nelli) and Polissena Margherita Nelli (1524–1588).
After being orphaned and following her father's second marriage, Polissena entered monastic life at the age of 14, taking the name Sister Plautilla Nelli. She rose to fame as the first female painter of the Florentine Renaissance. Among her many works, which she humbly signed with the formula “orate pro pictora” (pray for the paintress), her masterpiece “The Last Supper” stands out, currently exhibited in the museum of Santa Maria Novella in Florence.
To honor Sister Plautilla’s memory, in the early 20th century, the Florence Committee for City Aesthetics placed an image of the Immaculate Conception on the palace facade. This work, by the Dominican friar Angelico Spinillo of the San Marco convent, is housed within the building's original ancient tabernacle.
Restoration and Archaeological Discoveries
Throughout the centuries, Palazzo Nelli has witnessed many transformations that unfortunately erased its original frescoes. However, its history took a decisive turn in November 2021 when the building was acquired by Biancaspina srl, owned by the Russi family.
During recent restoration works, the removal of a wall revealed a previously unknown secondary cellar. Inside, an ancient underground well was discovered—a rare testament to the noble palace’s original water system.
A Mirror to Michelangelo’s Secret Room
The most fascinating aspect of this discovery is its geographical context: the cellar is located exactly opposite Michelangelo Buonarroti’s world-famous "Secret Room" (Stanza Segreta), situated beneath the Medici Chapels.
Separated only by the narrow street of via del Canto de' Nelli, these two spaces create a unique underground parallel between the historic Nelli residence and the refuge where the Renaissance genius hid in 1530 to escape papal retribution.
